In depth
The Comunidade Israelita de Lisboa (Jewish Community of Lisbon) and the Comunidade Israelita do Porto (Jewish Community of Porto) are the two Portuguese Jewish communities authorized by the Portuguese government to issue certificates of Sephardic ancestry.
These certificates confirm that the applicant is a descendant of Sephardic Jews of Portuguese origin, based on surnames, family traditions, language (Ladino), and genealogical research. The certificate is a prerequisite for the Portuguese citizenship application.
The certification process is rigorous — applicants must submit extensive genealogical documentation, and the communities may request additional evidence. Ancestra coordinates with both communities on behalf of clients.
