In depth
An Archivio di Stato (State Archive) is an Italian provincial archive, located in each of Italy's 107 provincial capitals. It holds historical civil registry records (atti di stato civile) from 1808-1866 (depending on region) to 1945, after which records are held by the local USC-equivalent (anagrafe).
For Italian CBD cases, the Archivio di Stato is the primary source of: (1) pre-1945 civil registry records (birth, marriage, death), (2) notarial records (which can establish property ownership and family relationships), (3) military records (which can establish citizenship), and (4) census records (anagrafi storiche).
Each Archivio di Stato has its own catalog and access policies. Many have digitized their records and made them available online through the Antenati (Ancestors) portal maintained by the Italian government.
