The SRE (Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores, Secretariat of Foreign Affairs) is the Mexican government ministry that processes Mexican citizenship by descent applications. It is based in Mexico City and has offices (oficinas consulares) at Mexican consulates worldwide.
For Mexican CBD cases, the SRE is the primary filing authority. Applications can be filed at the SRE in Mexico City or at any Mexican consulate abroad. The SRE issues the Mexican citizenship certificate (certificado de nacionalidad mexicana) upon approval.
Mexican citizenship by descent is available to children and grandchildren of Mexican nationals by birth. Processing time is 6-14 months. Mexico permits dual citizenship.
