In depth
Filiação is the Brazilian legal concept of filiation — the parent-child relationship that establishes Brazilian citizenship by descent. Under the Brazilian Constitution and nationality law, a child born to a Brazilian parent is Brazilian regardless of where they are born.
Brazilian citizenship by filiação has no generational limit — descendants of any generation of Brazilian emigrants can claim citizenship. The process involves filing with the Consulado-Geral do Brasil (Brazilian consulate) or directly with a Cartório (notary office) in Brazil.
Brazilian filiação citizenship is among the fastest CBD regimes globally, with processing times of 6-12 months. Brazil permits dual citizenship.
